Think the Generation Xers are cruising the 'Net like modern-day cyber-surf yogis?

Think again.

The median age of Web users is getting up in years now -- to the ripe age of 38 in the last two years -- according to a survey by Estats.com. Older folks typically means better wages, so the possibilities of e-commerce can only expand.

Just in 1996, the median age was 32. Surprisingly, the core group of all Web users are the baby boomers -- ages 35-54 -- who make up about 54 percent of all Netizens.

Gen X? Well, this age group, 18 to 34, make up just 35 percent of the community, including 13 percent of 18-24 years old and 22 percent of those 25-34 years old.

Comprising the third largest group are those 55 or older, at about 11 percent.

A few other tidbits:

  • 61 percent of Netizens are male -- although women are growing faster.
  • Median household income is $59,500, with 61 percent of users over $50,000.
  • 67 percent have earned a bachelor's degree with just 8 percent of users having only a high school education.
  • Most work in professional, managerial, education or computer-related fields.
  • 42 percent are married.
