What's the secret to capturing more of your target market? If you were a NASCAR driver determined to have a winning season, you'd want the best car with the most powerful engine allowed. Then you'd put together the fastest pit crew equipped with the finest tools available.

If that racecar is your business, you'd better have the right tools and crew to keep it moving at top speed. For your business, its your marketing strategy, materials and systems which are your tools.

The truth is that many business owners try to grow their businesses with a marketing toolbox that's almost empty or is filled with outmoded tools that don't get results. No matter how hard they try, they're continually frustrated. Are you stuck in this pit?

The more leads you generate, the more effective you are at building credibility, and the stronger your relationships with prospects, the more clients you'll have. To accomplish this you need a marketing toolbox with the right tools.

Mike called me after firing his previous marketing consultant. I wasn't sure whether he was talking to me because he was a glutton for punishment or because he was just frustrated.

It turned out that after six months, the marketing consultant he had hired had improved Mike's sales. Neither the web site, the monthly newsletter or the quarterly report that the marketing consultant worked on had made a difference.

I asked Mike to outline his marketing strategy and explain the system he was using to generate leads, track them, convert prospects to clients and then to up-sell existing clients. He couldn't answer. He didn't have a strategy or system in place to do any of this; his marketing toolbox was virtually empty.

The consultant Mike hired had worked on his website and monthly newsletter and reports without understanding how they should function as part of the company's marketing system. Without a marketing strategy to guide his work, the consultant's efforts were a waste of time and of Mike's money.
