One of the most common communication problems between people are knee-jerk reactions.
Watch yourself this week. Are you responding to people or just reacting? If you are reacting then you are on automatic and not at choice. If you are able to, take a moment to respond and to think about:
- What you want to say.
- How to best get across what you want to say.
- What words are best for the situation.
- What tone of voice is best for the situation
- How to come from a positive, respectful intention.
- What you can say that will further (enhance) the conversation.
I know that seems like a lot to think about when you are simply conversing. However, straight talk requires thought, discipline, courage and focus. Straight talk is saying what needs to be said with respect and dignity. Thoughtful means just what it says – full of thought. Give some thought to your words and communication - because what you say does make a difference.
