Real estate can be a very exciting industry to work in-one that provides many opportunities for personal and professional growth. It is also a profession that is suited to a variety of people. But to be successful in real estate, there are certain questions you should ask yourself, and information you should review, to best determine if it is the right choice for you.

Anyone who aspires to have a career in real estate should have a basic knowledge of what working in real estate really means. It's important to become informed of the day-to-day activities of a real estate agent, what services an agent provides and what qualities are required to become successful. 

There are literally hundreds of thousands of real estate agents in the United States, however it is estimated that only about 20% of those agents do 80% of the business. What this means is that 20% of the real estate population in the U.S. earns about 80% of all real estate commissions. To determine if you have the qualities to be a part of that 20%, you need to prepare by learning what a career in real estate is all about.

Step one is having a clear understanding of what a real estate agent is. An agent is someone who, for a fee, brings real estate buyers and sellers together and helps them to negotiate an agreement and close a transaction.  Real estate agents work with many different types of properties,  including residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural properties-the most common being residential real estate. In order to successfully manage any type of real estate, an agent must be knowledgeable on many matters, including transaction forms, financing, property taxes, home improvement, real estate laws and much more.

There are some specific qualities that are vital to success in the real estate industry.   You need integrity. Real estate agents must work diligently to preserve and improve their reputation in the community. This is crucial to client referrals and retention.

You also must be independent and a self-starter. For all practical purposes, real estate agents primarily work for themselves, which means they must generate their own business in order to earn an income.  Therefore, it is imperative to your success that you are very self-disciplined.

Like most service-oriented jobs, a real estate agent cannot be afraid of hard work, especially during the initial stages of your career. It takes an enormous amount of time and energy to build up a clientele, and in the beginning it's particularly important for agents to be flexible and accommodating. It's commonly known that many real estate agents work on Sundays, but you should also be willing to work evenings and holidays too.

However, it's important to note that successful real estate agents who take the time to develop a stable clientele and referral system, have much more control over their schedules, allowing for a more balanced lifestyle.  

The key to real estate is that you must enjoy working with people-this is vital if you want to be a success. A wide variety of people need the services of a real estate agent and regardless of the client's personality, an agent must spend time with them and put energy into meeting their needs.  The vary nature of a real estate transaction is such that there are bound to be emotional times. An agent's job is to be the calming presence throughout the entire process. Additionally, it helps to be an empathetic person. During the home buying or selling experience, an agent must be able to identify with the customer's feelings. In line with this, it also helps to be a good listener. In real estate the emphasis is on listening, not talking, because communication is more about truly hearing what the client wants.

A real estate agent must also be an expert on the product. In other words, an agent must be very knowledgeable of the market they work in-this includes being familiar with the properties in that market and all amenities associated with those properties. This aspect of the job requires total dedication because if you are not the expert, your clients will not have confidence in your efforts.

What it all comes down to is that you really need to ask yourself a few things, such as, are you a leader, do you take the initiative, do you have effective communication skills, are you enthusiastic and do you have a history or pattern of success in previous ventures. Each of these things contributes greatly to a career in real estate and can be the determining factors of your success.

Real estate isn't for everyone, but for those who choose to make a career of it, real estate has the potential to result in great success.
