The hallmark of redesign is the use of what the client already has. For this reason, it is a very practical, comparatively inexpensive solution to what clients feel is not working in their homes.
There are many types of situations that lend themselves to redesign. For example, the family who finds their dream home only to learn they can’t get a mortgage due to the more stringent lending guidelines. They decide that, rather than move, they will improve their existing home and make the best of a disappointing situation.
There is the older couple who is downsizing and has no idea where to start with what they need or what will work in their new home. Then, there are those who are just plain sick and tired of the way their home looks and want a “makeover.”
Redesigners are trained to listen to the client’s wants and needs. In turn, clients are pleasantly surprised at what a savvy redesigner is able to accomplish with little or no money.
One client had an urgent request. She was having weekend guests and the room was a mess. She did not want to spend a lot of time or money getting it ready. Could I help? See for yourself. The pictures tell the whole story.
What goes unnoticed in the before pictures are the best features the room has to offer – the large windows and beautiful hard wood floors. The space was quite sizeable but didn’t appear so because the bed was placed in the middle, giving the room the appearance of being smaller. Visually, it was cut in half.
The solution for accenting the large windows and letting in more light was to reposition the bed in front of the smaller window. When the drapes on the large window were pulled back the light came pouring in. The rug was removed to show off the gleaming hard wood floors. Moving the bed dramatically opened up the floor space as well.
All that was needed was to highlight the best features of the bedroom. The transformation was performed in one hour using only the furnishings that were originally present. Best of all, everyone asked, “Is this the same room?” Another redesign mission accomplished.
If the purchase of a new home is not in your immediate future, consider improving what you already have. Redesign is an affordable, common sense solution to turning your existing house into the home of your dreams.
