Outback Dreams And Lone Star Livin’: The Power of Vision

You’ve heard it all before. "You get what you ask for." "If you can see it and believe it, you can achieve it." Yeah, right. So how come I’m not living happily ever after in a palace with Prince Charming who, by the way, is handsome, romantic AND loves to cook? And YOU might ask yourself, "How come I’m not selling all my listings to pre-approved buyers whose loans ALL fund on time?"

The answer is simple according to Stephen Covey. In "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" he notes about envisioning our future, "Begin with the end in mind." Well, d-u-h. What does THAT mean?

You see I’m from the Land Down Under and back then in my youth I didn’t know a thing about visualizing my future let alone having a mental picture of Mr. Right. Furthermore, I’m from Adelaide, South Australia. That’s important here because Adelaide and Little Rock, Arkansas are very similar. Everyone knows everyone else. Everyone knows everyone else’s business. Nobody ever leaves. (Unless, of course, you’re running for public office.) However, when I was growing up there as a little girl I had this ongoing dream about traveling around the world to exotic places. I wanted to be different. I wanted to be special. I wanted people to notice me, big time! The only problem was, I just didn’t have the foggiest idea how on earth I was going to do it.

My Mother often used to catch me in our back yard all dressed up in a little Wild West outfit complete with guns and cowboy hat. There I was pretending to be on a stage, bowing before a huge invisible audience. Now here’s where it gets weird. Guess what I was doing? I was singing a song called "Deep In the Heart of Texas!" I didn’t even know where Texas was! At eight years old I was gung-ho on playing Cowboys and Indians while all the other little girls were playing with Barbie dolls. Go figure.

Talk about ‘vision by default!’ Take a look at me now…here I am living "Deep In the Heart of Houston," PLUS this is the tenth country in the world I’ve lived in. PLUS for the past 20 (something) years I’ve been on the stage as a professional pianist. (I still enjoy playing with cowboys too but I’m not going there in this article!) So now you know the REST of the story…

Maybe Stephen Covey has a point. We can all shape our own future if we DELIBERATELY choose what we want. We can picture the END result and START from there.

What about you? Where do YOU see yourself in 10 years? Or even one year? Do you see yourself being the top producing REALTORÒ of your company or are you stuck in a proverbial rut? Be careful what you wish for. I’m here to tell all of y’all that we eventually get exactly what we ask for – whether we recognize it or not. It’s called vision and here’s how it works: whatever we repeatedly focus on and talk about we attract into our lives. We are constantly reaping the results of our thoughts and words. So how is YOUR life right now?

Today I’ve simply changed from the musical stage to the speaking stage. Did I ever realize the powerful impact of my words and dreams as a kid? No! Am I careful about what I say and envision these days? Yes! I’m going to be more than just a "survivor of the outback." How about you?
