Looking Good On Video

When done correctly, a promotional tape can be a memorable way to introduce prospective clients to your services. Just as you would hire professionals to write your script, shoot the footage and oversee the production, you should give equal consideration to your video’s on air talent. If it’s you in the starring role, don’t assume that you can just walk off the street and onto the set.  As ironic as it sounds, it takes a lot of preparation to appear natural.

Dressing for video requires as much common sense as it does fashion sense. It’s important to look professional, but that doesn’t necessarily mean wearing a business suit. Your clothes should reflect what you do. The buttoned-down look would seem out of place on the owner of a river-rafting company, for instance, but a business consultant shouldn’t appear for his or her shoot wearing jeans and a plaid shirt. If you are unsure of what to wear, err on the side of being conservative. And remember to use heavy makeup so the studio lights don’t wash out your skin and to powder your face and neck to absorb perspiration and eliminate shine.

If you opt for traditional dress, here are some suggestions:

Women should:

• Keep their wardrobe simple and professional looking.
• Wear a dark suit or jacket (navy, black).
• Wear a contrasting blouse.
• Wear clothing that complements their body type.
• Make certain their outfit fits well, is in good repair and has been properly cleaned.
• Keep accessories to a minimum – less is more.

Avoid wearing:

• A white blouse
• Busy prints or polka dots
• Shiny jewelry or noisy bracelets
• A low-cut blouse or revealing clothing.

Men Should:

• Wear a dark suit.
• Wear a light blue shirt.
• Wear a neutral-colored tie with a subdued pattern.
• Wear over-the-calf socks or risk having exposed ankles

 Avoid wearing:

• Striped shirts.
• White shirts.
• Jeweled or gold tie tacks (they reflect light).
• Gold chains, distracting jewelry.
•
During a taping:

• Always look alert and interested.
• Don’t look at monitors – you don’t want the camera to catch you smoothing your hair.
• Don’t fidget

On video, your concern isn’t just getting your message out; you have to worry about looking and sounding good while you do it. When the tape is over, you will have left the viewer with an impression. You want to make sure it’s a superb one.
