Dear George: "I use Netscape for my E-mail and browsing. My office is rife with gossip and alarmist-type cautions regarding the 'Melissa Virus'. Am I 'safe' or just misinformed?" - Need To Know Dear Need-To-Know: My understanding is that the reach of the "Melissa Virus" is limited to Microsoft Word documents transmitted via Microsoft Outlook E-mail. However, since the virus was first reported there have been a series of "look-a-likes." Check your Netscape NetCenter site and your anti-virus software site for updates. Dear George: "I would like to save a Microsoft Word file from a floppy disk on Drive A: to Microsoft Word on the hard drive. I have not been able to do it. Your help would be appreciated". Trying Dear Trying: Insert the floppy disk in Drive A. Open MS Word. Click on the "down" arrow to the right side of the entry bar on the "Open" dialogue screen. Click on "3* Floppy (A:)" and open the Word document. After it loads click on "File" and "Save As". The "Save As" Dialogue Screen appears. Click on the "down" arrow and select your "C" Drive. The directory structure will appear. Select the directory you wish or double click on a directory to reach the file structure within it. Dear George: "I recently read about a free Internet Service Provider called NetZero.com. They offer free dialup access in exchange for the user having a 3*-by-1 inch window as long as the user is online with NetZero. The window displays ads that change every 30 seconds. I accessed their Web site, downloaded the free software and installed it. Everything appeared to work until I attempted to actually use it. The telephone number I selected for my area displayed but after a half-minute a message flashed "no answer" and the program immediately attempted to dial again. I've read their FAQs, sent them E-mail and even tried their telephone help line. I was on 'hold' for twenty minutes and gave up. Can you help?" - Discouraged Dear Discouraged: Your E-mail stated your Operating System is Windows 95. You need to upgrade to the latest version (1.3). This applies only to Windows 95 users. Enter the URL: http://support.microsoft.com/download/support/mslfiles/MSDUN13.EXE Save MSDUN13.exe to your hard drive. I usually save such a download to a "Downloads" directory. When the download is complete, disconnect and close all open Windows programs (including any anti-virus scanning programs on your system tray). Follow the onscreen instructions when you double-click on the MSDUN13.exe file. |
