Dear George:In your column you state that we should always save an attached file to disk instead of opening and running it. I figured it was safer to open than to save. I guess I've just been lucky. I only open those attachments that I recognize.” – Lucky

Dear Lucky: By opening an attached file you may be opening a file that contains a virus. By saving that same file to your disk (usually your “C” drive to a folder you set up to “clear” e-mail attachments), you can then scan the file with your antivirus software before you open it. This is not a 100% failsafe action. However, it is far better than directly opening an attachment to an e-mail. Suppose you recognize the attached file type. Further suppose it is from a trusted friend. He or she might be forwarding a virus in the attachment without even knowing it.

Dear George: I need to upgrade my printer. I'd love a color laser but I can't afford one. Can you suggest three models that offer excellent photo quality and speedy text printing?” – Speedy in Alaska

Dear Speedy: Check out the Cannon BJC-5100. Its current street price is $86.99 to $149.00. Another inkjet you might wish to consider is the Epson Stylus Color 860. The street price for this workhorse is $77.77 to $279.00. If you want to look at a laser printer, consider the Epson EPL-5700i. It carries a current street price between $329.29 and $399.99. Another product to consider is the HP LaserJet 1100. Its current street price is between $259.00 and $428.95. It pays to shop around for the best printer price for a particular make and model.

Dear George: “I recently read a flyer promoting the ‘e-PRO’ designation. The flyer stated that it is a course you can take entirely online. As a REALTOR®, I’m very much aware of the need to acquire a certain level of Internet proficiency. Do you know anything about this course? If you do, would you recommend it?” – Pondering

Dear Pondering: I just enrolled in the e-PRO course in early June. So far, my experience with the course has been very good. However, I’m only on lesson 2 of 5 in Unit 1 of 6. I am able to tell you that it appears to take a very gradient approach. The student is allowed 6 months from the first login to complete. Completion of the e-PRO curriculum is estimated to take from 12 to 20 hours (online). The screens are informative, entertaining and thus far match my knowledge base.
