Before you spend any time in interviews with hourly job applicants, ask them a preliminary question set – either on your employment application or by phone – which determines whether they meet your minimum hiring requirements. If you find they don’t, there’s no reason to bring them in for testing or an interview.

Suggested Preliminary Question Set:

  • People who need a job will tell you they’ll work any days, hours, or times you want. However, if hired and the hours aren’t to their liking, soon they’ll be showing up late or not at all. Head this aggravation off at the pass by asking these questions before the applicant knows what days/hours/shifts you need to fill:
    1. What days/hours/shifts do you prefer not to work?
    2. What days/hours/shifts can you work?
    3. What days/hours/shifts can’t you work or don’t want to work?
  • Will they be happy working for what you’re paying or always on the look out for a better paying job?
    1. What is your minimum salary expectation?
  • Can they start the job when needed and be there on time each day?
    1. If hired, when are you available to start?
    2. Do you have reliable transportation?
    3. At your last job, what was the latest you ever arrived at work?
  • Past behavior is our best indicator of future behavior. Ask:
    1. What’s the hardest job you’ve ever had and how long were you there?
    2. Have you ever been fired or asked to resign from a job? Explain.
    3. Tell me about the times you’ve been given added responsibilities, a promotion, or raise.
